Calling All Poets!

July 18, 2008
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

On Friday 18 July, 7-9 pm as the grand finale to a Poetry Marathon, we’re asking poets to come and read some of their favourite poems (preferably their own).

If you’d like to be one of those poets, we’d like to give you a slot. For more details, please contact Caroline Lazar on 07779580448 or caro.lazar@gmail.com

“Set in the south-west corner of the square, its grey-brown tower and gaunt walls don’t look heartening – but they contain more human warmth than I’ve encountered in any other church, anywhere, ever” – Andrew Motion

St Peter de Beauvoir church in Hackney is holding a 50-hour Poetry Marathon to raise funds for a £10,000 appeal for essential access work. Funds raised will help fund disabled access for the 19th century church, which has steep stairs up to its main entrance and down to its basement. The Poetry Marathon takes place 13-18 July 12 noon-9 pm. For most of the Marathon, local people will be sponsored to read aloud their favourite poetry and verse, anything from Shakespeare to song lyrics and comic verse. Rev Julia Porter-Pryce, vicar at St Peter’s, said: “We need to raise £10,000 to help make the church more accessible; not just for wheelchair users but to open up the church to the local community.”

The Marathon will culminate in a gala evening on Friday 18th July, when the final two hours will be compered by Vivette Ferguson and poets will read or recite their own work.
